Eco Fashion by Rebekah HumphreyLocal designers are ready and willing to feed some fresh GREENS to those in need of a clearer conscience!
Ecologically friendly clothing is hitting the mainstream with all positivity. High regard for nature is being heard through the softness of safe soy products and others. Soy being the cashmere of the plant fabric world, and yet, only one of the main fabric sources for our present eco-fashions. Organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, vegetable dyes and recycled items are leading many more to understand the simplicity of removing dangerous toxins from their everyday items.
The process of eliminating the need of herbicides, pesticides and artificial fertilizers, which consequently poison our environment, is now in motion. The usage of petroleum and rayon is slowly waning towards completion as environmental awareness increases. People can begin to look on the bright side with these alternative producers designing with beauty and care all that is needed for a healthier planet. Our local designers provide ideas of mindfulness in shipping and transportation methods as this is also a major concern. When one buys eco-friendly and local they can know that the producers of their garments are interested in making as little of an impact as possible in bringing goods to their cities.
There is a whole lifestyle rooted in Eco-fashion. It is urban, it is mindful and it allows personal self-expression. The greener you go- the better you feel. Practicing a green lifestyle puts all those involved into a new paradigm of acceptance. We will no longer be merely consuming our earth but growing it, cultivating health and happiness through attuning with our natural state. Humanity can now choose to reach homeostasis without the fear of hurting those creatures that surround and share this world with us. A balance or equilibrium can be maintained through simply knowing and again trusting the oldest plant life to sustain us.
Concerned about the Incinerator???
"Garbage" is not a source of renewable energy!Numbers to know:
- 33 long term jobs estimated for $200 million taxpayers' dollars
- 43 Durham doctors have registered opposition to the incinerator
- 33,000 doctors sent an open letter to European Parliament in 2008 citing their concerns regarding the health effects from incinerators
- 30 percent of the materials burned, by mass, remains as ash with toxic residues; incineration actually means "Burn, then bury"
- 0 (zero!) Regional public information sessions since Fall 2007
1) Complete and mail a statement that you strongly object to Durham Region's plan to build a waste incinerator. You urge them to abandon any incineration plans because of the health and financial risks. Instead they must immediately implement strategies to optimize waste reduction, reuse and diversion.

Planned Planting by Rebekah Humphrey
As we begin this New Year’s spring season and venture out of our winter habitat, some new ideas have the potential to grow. We are coming to understand that our lives are making a shift and that the space opening up for growth & change is wide. The resources of our past are in need of support. Our water, food and land supplies are in need of protection and production.
As all of these structures change, our ideas about how we buy food, spend money and gain the items we need for survival must change too. Ecological, economical and social statuses are wavering, and bending our minds from what we have known of our past culture. Along with all of this, we can begin to see the necessity of our ability to support our own selves, and families. Using this new insight, we can go further and be aware that we need our communities and neighbors for this change as well.
Most of us have acknowledged that our environment is in motion; therefore we must counter-balance the effects of climate change as best as we can by extending forward from our past and creating re-useable, eco- friendly & sustainable products. We can use any land we have and the tools we have now for the benefit & strength of our future earth.
The most sustainable design for these new changes to our earth and our lives rests in a little something called “perma-culture” or permanent agriculture. The basis of this design being best described as planned planting.
Perma-culturists use the skills of design to plant gardens with the intention that the garden will be:
1. tended by nature
2. use no pesticides
3. increase soil nutrients
4. self-renewing
5. self-maintaining
6. resilient
7. mimic the structure and function of forests
These goals to create gardens that need no pesticides, fertilize themselves and increase soil nutrients, are supporting the future of human foods, never mind land and water resources. Species of plants that support one another in a mutual sharing guild help to increase our earth’s ability to maintain homeostasis or balance.
Perma-culture uses nature’s natural patterns for the plants to grow and survive. Hence these gardens are the hardiest and made for survival, especially when we silly humans really need them. So with all this in mind, all that needs to be done is simple. We can use a quote from a very well known ecologist and perma-culturist, Bill Mollison, “Though the problems of the world are increasingly complex, the solutions remain embarrassingly simple.”
This involves planting our plants with awareness of natural growth needs, root depths, nutrient needs and of course sunlight/shade. The first step is in ridding the sterile lawn ideals of the past. Lawn mowers, fossil fuels, pesticides and lack of natural creative potential are no longer worth our pennies. So much water is wasted in attempting to keep grass alive, when a garden in its place could utilize the water to produce food.
A very clear image of an example is a retreat center in Costa Rica. Now, amongst all the green, do you see yards with manicured lawns in this paradise? How about the usage of pesticides? Well, these vines, fleshy plants and full leafed ground to canopy plants are part of a forest edible garden. They are what all of us could enjoy in some form within our very own neighborhoods using native Canadian vegetation.
As well, many people are learning just how easy it is to go GREEN even in the suburban areas. Opportunities are here for those with backyards, front lawns and even those with window sills to start growing. Really, a natural green growing *anything* will help our planet at this point. So why not drop some seeds and watch them grow?? A shovel, a hoe, some seeds or plants from a friend and here we go. The more we involve ourselves again with our natural surroundings, we exponentially benefit physically, mentally and emotionally.
Truth be told: Plants enhance the environment and our environment enhances our lives. So why not, dig our hands in, plant more and let nature take care of us !
How are your fruits and veggies grown?
Look on the labels that are stuck on the veggies and fruits.
- A four-digit number means it's conventionally grown.- A five-digit number beginning with 9 means it's organic.
- A five-digit number beginning with 8 means it's genetically modified.
